Pit-Fired Pottery

Pit-Fired Pottery

Pit-fired pottery uses a primitive method of firing ceramics in an open wood fire for many hours. The artwork is carefully sealed inside saggar containers that contain various combustibles. This produces randomized surface colours and glaze patterns while leaving smokey scorched marks on the raw clay areas.

Experimental processes of including both inorganic and natural organic materials in the clay bodies and saggar vessels – result in every piece being one-of-a-kind New Zealand made artwork.
